The
job of a nurse is a challenging one as each day they go into their place of
work unaware of the horrors they may have to deal with.
In
March 2017, a baby girl named Delilah was admitted to Wolfson Children’s
Hospital in Jacksonville, Florida. An extensive examination showed that Delilah
had been neglected and abused.
For
one pediatric nurse who saw baby Delilah that day, her life was about to change
forever.
The
14-month-old baby was completely malnourished with several broken bones and a
fracture to her skull. Her injuries were the result of “non-accidental trauma.”
But
Jess Hamm, a nurse in the pediatric intensive care unit, was on shift that day
and after spotting the tiny baby, who despite her horrific injuries and abuse
was still fighting for her life, knew immediately what she had to do.
“My
heart was broken. I don’t want to cry. She was just so lifeless but she still
held onto my finger,” Jess said, according to wfla.com
Jess
decided she was going to take Delilah home and adopt her. Her instincts had
kicked in and she knew in her heart that she could provide this baby with all
the love and care she deserved.
In
order to go from Delilah’s nurse to Delilah’s new mom, Jess set up a meeting
with the caseworkers at the Florida Department of Children and Families.
But
while sitting down with the staff and filling out the adoption paperwork, Jess
learned some new information about Delilah that shocked her and changed
everything.
Delilah
had a twin sister – and that twin sister Caroline was also in the hospital. So
without even giving it a second thought she adopted both girls and gave them
the loving and healthy home that they deserve.

These two girls have such a bright future thanks to their
guardian angel Jess! They will never have to endure the horrors of their past
and my heart fills with joy seeing their happy faces.
