Almost everyone has had chickenpox, and I for one still remember how terrible it was. Still, I'm glad I've already had it and don't have to worry about getting it as an adult, when it's supposed to be even worse.
Chickenpox isn't considered to be particularly dangerous and everyone who
gets it suffers through the same pain, but for one mother, her son's sickness
turned into a nightmare.
It all started when Hayley Lyons from Warrington, England brought her son
Lewis to the doctor because the boy had an alarmingly high fever
The doctor recommended that Halley give her son ibuprofen to relieve his
pain and reduce his fever. She trusted this advice and did as the doctor said.
After Lewis took the ibuprofen, his condition became worse, and Hayley had
to rush him to the hospital for a second time. And this time, the boy was
diagnosed with a serious infection.
Since one of her friends' kids also had chicken pox, Halley felt that she
wanted to warn other children.
Here's how she wrote on Facebook:
"Chickenpox is going round again can I please remind
people NOT to give your children nurofen/ibuprofen.
Four different doctors from our local (out of hours)
prescribed it for Lewis as we couldn't get his temp down. This type of medicine
is an anti inflammatory, it reacts with chicken pox making them go deeper into
the skin tissue.
It was only wen we took Lewis to Alderhey because the
doctors from our hospital kept sending him home saying it was 'just chicken
pox' we found this out."
"He ended up with septicaemia and was admitted straight
to Alderhey as soon as we arrived there.
Only because we persevered and took Lewis to a children's
hospital off our own back was he ok.
This could have ended up so much worse if it wasn't for
those doctors at Alderhey and their advice, care and knowledge.
Only use CALPOL for their temps.
It does actually state on the nurofen website not to take
this medicine with chickenpox. (We discovered this after it happened) But when
our doctors prescribe it, who are we to question it?"
Thanks to the fact that Hayley was so observant and realized that Lewis was
seriously ill, Lewis turned out okay. Find out more information about the side
effects of ibuprofen on Drugs.com.
